Dress rehearsal
As Ellie is doing the Mother's Day Classic in a few weeks I volunteered to take her to the domain and show her the course. I picked her up in the new lulumobile and we zipped up to the city.We set off at what was supposed to be a leisurely pace but did the first km in just under 6 mins.. oops. After that we settled down and did one lap of the MDC course and then headed out to the Opera House and back.It was a gorgeous morning for running, clear skies, sun glistening off the harbour and not too many tourists around that early to get in our way. We saw plenty of runners but no CRs this morning. Coming back into the domain we headed up a few small hills which seemed hard work at that stage but we maintained our pace. It was good having Ellie with me otherwise I would have been tempted to stop when the clock ticked over the hour but we kept going till we hit 65 mins and 10km on the dot. No real problems which is very encouraging. A bit of itb pain in the left leg but my right knee which is my main concern seems very happy at the moment...long may it continue. This week I ran just over 30km and my total for the month was 109km. Slowly building back up to a reasonable level now and feeling pretty good.Finished off with some coffee and chat at a cafe in Clovelly; a perfect way to end a run.I got home to find Mr lulu looking a bit tired after being sucked into the SWEAT squad vortex and being dragged around the park at high speed. Once he'd recovered we headed out for a running related barbecue to celebrate Kit, Gil, Alison and Kulinda's Canberra marathon triumph. A great afternoon of eating, drinking and running stories with lots of the runners as well as Sean and Cindy. Very pleasant way to spend Sunday afternoon.Food:B: Tropical Orange PSL: Barabecue steak, sausage and salads plus some a small piece of Alison's delicious chocolate cake
Rainy 40 mins
It started to rain as soon as I stepped foot outside the door this morning so I popped back inside for a cap and then set off.
Down through Queen's Park I exchanged G'days Sean who had yet another group of people going through pain and then into Centennial Park. Up around the lake through the middle and home for my standard 40 min loop. I must develop a different 40 min loop one day! Took it nice and easy as this is fifth run of the week and the first time I've done that for some time.
The odd twinge from the right knee and a bit of rubbing on the blister is all I can muster in complaints today!
Congrats to Jen_runs on a fine 5km performance this morning. She's back!
Just back from watching Mr lulu race in the cross country 4km race; his first in the Randwick Botany Harriers colours. He truned in a respectable time of 15.22 for the 4km and felt pretty good until the last 1km when he started to fade. The first 1 and 2 places were taken by Sean's Randwick Harrier fast boys; the winner's time was 11.17 and they certainly fly. The boys kindly put on a good show for me before the race. I was sitting on a bench near the Randwick Harriers Tent when the boys arrived and proceeded to strip off and change in front of me. Good thing Mr lulu was off doing his warm up whilst Bad lulu enjoyed the show :)

An easy morning
Good lulu managed to get out of bed at a reasonable hour and head down to Queen's Park for an easy 25 mins this morning. Pleased to report that the combined physio/Easy Tiger morning seems to be paying off. Nothing hurt, not a squeek out of anything this morning. Now that really is progress. My poor old butt was hurting by the time I'd finished all the exercises prescribed by the physio though. As long as it works it will be worth the pain to my wallet and my butt! It's getting exciting here in the lulu household. I will have run over 30km this week and Mr lulu took 20secs of his Big Bertha time and he is starting to look like a lean mean running machine. Off to pilates at lunchtime which will doubtless involve more glute exercises so I'll be lucky to walk let alone run tomorrow. Good thing it's a day for cross training tomorrow!Food:B: Banana smoothieMT: crispbreads, cottage cheese and an apple

Bit of a tempo
The doona was weighed down with lead this morning and I was unable to get out from under it when the alarm went off at 5.30. Mr lulu didn't seem to have the same problem on his side of the bed as he was out at 5. My first appointment for the day was with Jerry the physio. After some prodding and poking the verdict was pronounced that I still have tendonitis in the right knee but that it's not serious (grade 2 which means it hurts during the run but doesn't get any worse). He then proceeded to give me masses of strengthening exercises to do for the glutes, hips and VMO. By strenthening up these areas it will take the pressure off the knee and hopefully it will be able to get better. In the meantime he didn't tell me to stop running. I didn't ask specifically though ;)Next on the list for a visit today was Easy Tiger. I was armed with some instructions from Jerry for ET regarding loosening up the hip rotators, external and internal. This basically meant some glute loosening as well as some attention to the usual suspects the achilles and itbs.I did manage to squeeze in some work in between all this running related activity, which is a good thing if I am to continue to fund Easy Tiger's lifestyle. Once I'd done some work and was back at home I headed out for my missed run of this morning. This was a bit of a faster run. I did 10 mins warm up and then set Garth to pace me for 20 mins at 6.05m/km. Despite a nasty headwind and a slight incline for half of it I managed to stay slightly ahead of Garth and finished the 20 mins @ 6 min pace. Hardly blistering but it's a start. I did this run in my new shoes which involved protecting my heel with numerous layers of band-aids, tape, cushioning stuff and body glide. It worked and no further damage was done; yay! I found them better to run in today than the first couple of times and they definitely provide more support. Jerry the physio also thought that they were better for me than the Locos so I'll keep taping my heel so I can use them.Next on the list was to do the strengthening exercises which took me about 40 mins and include lots of bridging, clams and side leg rises for the glutes, and squats, one leg squats and side dips for the VMO. I've got to find time to do these every day before I go back to see Jerry again in 2 weeks. I've also got to buy a balance cushion thingie to improve my balance. I'll be off to Rebel tomorrow to see if I can track one down. That's it for now. Hope to be able to lever myself out of bed for a short run tomorrow morning.Food: B: Tropical PSMT: Tropical snack barL: As BAT: 2 crispbread with cottage cheeseD: Bean and sausage casserole, yoghurt.
I think it's progress
My run this morning started on a great note when I bumped into blckbox and Sydneygal who were out tackling some hills and the coastal path this morning. Had a brief chat before we headed off in opposite directions and very good to meet blckbox in person.I then headed down to Queen's and Centennial parks for my 40 minute loop. Everything felt pretty good today; nothing much to write about in the niggles department and I feel that we are making progress on the itb issues. Just the old dodgy right knee was grumbling but on a scale of 1-10 it was only a 1 or 2 on the pain levels. I felt pretty energetic today as well and as if I'm making some progress on my fitness too. All in all not a bad run. Tomorrow I'll do a 35 min tempo run and then I have a morning of fixing the niggles with an appointment with the phsyio and then another session with Easy Tiger to continue the good work. Maybe I can get this old body to run after all:)Haven't made any progress on the weight loss this week but feel slimmer so that's all that counts! Lentil power
Either DJ's lentils have special healing powers or it is the positive vibes or running with the Owl which meant I managed to do an hour of running this morning. Admittedly the first 8 mins were stop and start as I did 5 mins warm up to keep warm while I waited for the Owl and then we spent some time fiddling about looking for a toilet somewhere in the domain. First, I sent us in the wrong direction but then after our comfort break we set off properly. We headed down to Farm Cove and headed out to the Opera House, around Circular Quay and up to the rocks, back down George Street and back around the quay to the Opera House. Once we hit Farm Cove again the Owl had reached her intended run of 40 mins so she walked the rest of the way and I carried on for another circuit of the domain for a total of 62 mins (54 non-stop).After some stretching we had the obligatory coffee before we headed our separate ways battling the delights of the Sunday service public transport. The only fall out seems to be a slightly tight left itb but apart from that it's all good. I was back in the my old Locos today to give the blister a chance to heal before I try the new shoes again. Pretty happy with that; thanks for the great company Owly!
In the gym
I decided to head to the gym this morning and so caught the bus up to Bondi Junction and hit the elliptical running machine. I got into the groove and managed an hour despite getting bored towards the end. Then I did my weights programme which I noticed from my notebook I hadn't done for nearly two months.
I'm noticing a bit of tightness in the itb now so something at the gym obviously upset it. I'll be doing lots of stretching later on to try and settle it down before I meet the Owl for our run in the domain tomorrow. I have to work out the logistics for getting there by Sunday public transport.
Off for dinner at the house of Don Juan tonight; will it be lentils?
Blistering
That's not the pace I was running at but my left heel. This happened the last time I tried different shoes to the Locos and I ended up throwing them out. Hopefully it will improve once they've broken in or there's another $150 down the drain. In the meantime I'm going back to the trusty Locos for a few days so my heel can recover.Apart from that I had a relatively pain free run. 40 mins around the lake in Centennial and back home. I put in a few surges rather than doing the low heart rate run all the way around just to make sure I don't forget how to move my legs a bit quicker! Quite good fun and I got home quicker so I didn't have to put up with my blister for quite as long.Off to see my favourite crazy elbow guy to loosen up my tight hip/itb later on this afternoon after I've been to Pilates. One day soon I won't have anything to write about apart from the running, rather than reporting my latest niggle or injury. New shoes
A trip to Running Science yesterday resulted in a new pair of shoes. I am sad to see the back of my Loco Espressos as I liked them and liked supporting an independent company but unfortunately they are not the best shoe for me. I have ended up with the Brooks Radius as pictured below. A nice colour methinks! They are a neutral shoe but are more stable than the Loco and so better suited to a plodder such as me. Excellent service at Running Science which included the treadmill and video; it's not a nice sight seeing the back of your legs when you run. Just more motivation to keep on the diet though I suppose. The verdict was that actually my left leg is pretty neutral but the right one is the one that is splaying out and causing problems. This is presumably why that knee is the one that is susceptible to tendonitis. So of course this morning I had to go out and give the new shoes a try. They certainly felt different to the locos, much firmer and I'll reserve judgement until I've done a few more runs. I felt that my right knee was getting a few more twinges than before but we'll see; I could be imagining things but I think that the tendonitis may be coming back. I've made an appointment with the physio for next week to check it out. I'm not sure that the exercises I'm doing to strengthen my VMO are not actually aggravating that knee so I want to get a proper programme from Gerry the physio to make sure I'm doing the right things. Either that or I'm going to retire permanently to the couch. So this morning was just another 30 mins trotting around Queen's Park at a nice and easy pace. Good news is the itb is behaving, not a peep out of the achilles ( I think they're scared of Easy Tiger) and now just a few twinges in the old dodgy knee to deal with. Someone give me a new body!Food:B: blackforest PSMT: choc peanut protein barL: as aboveAT: 1 crispbread with cottage cheese and lemon protein barD: osso bucco with polenta and a glass of Sangiovese, a spoonful of Mr lulu's rhubarb tiramisu.
Back on the road
After 3 days of no exercise, which if I'm honest was quite nice, I headed out to test out the legs this morning. I had a visit to Easy Tiger yesterday afternoon and particularly enjoyed the elbow in the itb treatment! Consequently everything felt nice and lose this morning as I pottered along.I really did potter along too, not worried about speed and remembering at this stage I'm interested in building a base and losing weight not setting any land speed records. So nice and easy it was as I did my 40 min course through queens Park and around the lake in Centennial and back through Queen's Park.Beautiful autumn morning which was actually getting quite warm at the time I managed to drag myself out and about. All in all, feeling pretty good. ITB only a bit sore from the elbow treatment rather than being tight and everything else feels good! Am off to running science this afternoon to get them to look at my shoes to check that element out in case my itb is related to something as simple as the shoes.Happy days!Back to Blogging the food:B: Orange and Vanilla PS

Easter in the mountains
We were picked up by the Evil Twin Sister and her intended on Friday morning to head to their house in Mount Victoria in the Blue Mountains.Friday afternoon Mr lulu and I went out to do some suitable reconnaissance for running trails that would suit me; ie not too many hills to aggravate the tempermental itb. We found a couple of possilbilities for Saturday and Sunday runs particularly some paths that run alongside the railway and so are quite flat.Saturday morning we headed out in the very cool mountain air, long sleeves for me, and down to the railway track that ran out towards Lithgow. All went well for a couple of km before the track headed off down a steep gully. I went down some of it and then decided not to do too many hills so walked ran back up and then did a couple of laps of the part of the flat bit to make up my 30 mins before heading back to the house. Mr lulu went a lot further down the track and discovered that after that one steep hill it flattens out next to the railway for a long way. We'll know that the next time we stay at the house.Later on Saturday we decided some bush walking was in order. We checked out a path that went down from Mount Vic to Hartley Vale. This was a great walk quite steep in the initial stages but then mostly along the valley floor on a nice dirt road to Hartley. Definitely one to consider running on when I'm a bit fitter. In total we walked about 9.4 km down to a great restaurant called Collitt's Inn. No lunch for us today though but we'll do that some other time. Instead we called the ETS Dad and he drove down and picked us up.Saturday night turned into a late one putting the world to rights over a few bottles of wine and that and the fact that my left itb was really complaining about the bush walking made me decide to skip my Sunday run. Mr lulu went out to Victoria Falls along another road we had checked out on the Friday and reported a very pleasant run!We came back to Sydney on Sunday afternoon, caught up with some movies and the housework.Monday; no run today either as I still feel very sore around my left knee which is not good. Off to see Easy Tiger tomorrow to see what he can do. I'll try a short run in the morning.Monday weigh in:Weight lost -.3kg (total 3.3kg)Could have been worse considering there was some easter chocolates and wine consumed this weekend. Back to the programme this week though.Picture below shows our bush walk and the Saturday run.
3 in a row
After a late and boozy night ( my first for ages) with the Evil Twin Sister, planning her wedding I didn't run until lunch time. As this was my third day in a row I just wanted to do a short easy run so headed back to Queen's Park.Legs felt great with no itb problems and the rest of them feeling quite loose and relaxed. This is consistent with my theory that three days after a massage I really feel the benefit. This seems to happen each time I see Easy Tiger. My only concern was the slight twinge in my dodgy right knee which went when I stopped and walked for a few minutes. I now have a new programme based on advice from Sean which gives me 8 weeks to build my base before returning to full on SWEAT training. Fingers crossed that is the end of my niggles!Food:B: Banana smoothieMT: lemon protein bar; new flavour and very niceL: As brekkieAT: Cottage Cheese, apple and 3 oat cakesD:
A nice easy 30
A better night's sleep last night meant I was up at 5.40 and had time to do some stretching before I hit the road. I decided to take it nice and easy; good thing too as I don't think I could have run any faster if I had wanted to. Just a nice short loop around Queen's Park and then around Evans Street at the end to take it to 4.5km in 29 mins. Itb was stiff when I got up but after the run and some more stretching it felt better. That's a good sign I'm sure. At least it doesn't really hurt, just a bit tight and it's definitely improving.Food:B: Tropical fruit PS

SWEAT groupie
I headed out down to Centennial Park this morning to spy on the SWEAT crew and make sure they were looking after Ellie properly. I stopped and had a bit of a chat with Sean whilst watching the group do their drills and stride throughs before doing the 400s they had on the programme. It's certainly a big group these days. I had a quick chat to Kerrie and Ellie, waved to DJ and Sparkie (and Mr lulu of course) and then headed off again.I went through the middle of the park along the lake and then back up the hill to home. No cheating and walking up the hill home today, but it was hard work. I'll have to leave more hill work until the itb settles down though I think. Niggle status: not a peep out of the achilles, left itb tightened up but wasn't really painful. Bit stiff in the left hip when I got home but fine after stretching and attacking the TFL with the tennis ball. In total about 7.5 km and 48 mins.Off to Pilates later on.Food:B:Banana protein smoothieMT: choc peanut protein barL: As breakfastAT:Bounce protein ball and then a Sculpt bar after PilatesD:a few nuts and then roast chicken, pumpkin and peas.I was hungry today and couldn't seem to satisfy my hunger! Another cheering weekend
Saturday afternoon Mr lulu was taking part in a 6km cross country race at Mutch Park. We packed up our stuff for the Canberra trip in the rental car (still no replacement lulumobile, but it's coming) and headed to the park.
Mr lulu did a quick warm up and was joined by training partners Don Juan and Royworlds. Sean lined everyone up and off they went. This was quite a tough little course with three laps up and down a couple of quite big hills and then they disapeared into the distance before returning back to the start. Sean was leading the pack and some young guns were up there with him. Royworlds and DJ pulled away from Mr lulu on the second lap and Mr lulu finished in 24.55. Not bad considering he's still on the comeback trial. Unfortunately he now has a sore adductor so hopefully it's nothing more than a niggle that Easy Tiger can fix on Weds. It was fun cheering on in a small race for a change.
After that we headed down to Canberra for a serious cheering effort and the Canberra marathon.
We arrived about 6.30 had a rest and then a lovely dinner at Ottoman. I'm not sure the baklava I ate was on the diet menu but it was very yummy!
Sunday Mr lulu headed out for his long run and walked up to the start of the marathon. As I reached the first corner of the course the runners came down.. perfect timing! I cheered on everyone and then headed off to find the rest of the cheersquad who had been at the start and were making their way to my position when the runners passed by 4 times. It was great to see so many Coolrunners out there and to see my running buddies out on the course.
Lots of great performances but the highlights for me were :
- Seeing Uncle Dave powering along to a 2.40 finish
- Clairie's amazing 3.23.xx finish and the look on her face as she headed down the finishing chute; priceless
- CJ's incredible 13 minute pb to finish in 3.26. We had a lovely catch up and coffee and I handed over the promised Lindt chocolate
- Seeing my SWEAT gals achieve their goals and all come in around 3.50 and making it look easy; brilliant and very inspirational.
We had to head back to Sydney so I didn't see Luckly Legs finish in her record breaking 50kms attempt but it was fantastic to see her out on the course. Well done LL; you're even more of a legend now. 76 years young and a real inspiration to me and many others.
I was so inspired by all this success that I managed to sleep in this morning and miss my intended run. I've just returned from Easy Tiger sporting some lovely new paw prints. Can't wait to see them blossom in the next few days. Good thing I'm not in the habit of wearing short skirts.
Food wise I've had a pretty good week despite the travelling and have stuck mostly to the plan. The main exception being Saturday dinner but even then I didn't go too mad.
Weight loss
loss this week .3kg (total lost 3kgs) slow but steady progress.
All in all a great running weekend. Now I better get my act together and do some running myself tomorrow!
Back to my old haunt
It's ages since I've been able to run long enough to get down to the park, around the inside and back home again but now my niggles are definitely in remission I decided to do exactly that this morning. It was certainly cool this morning but not as cold as it will be in Canberra tomorrow! I pottered down to the park and headed off around the inside loop feeling quite spritely, but probably didn't look it :)Then it was back up the hill to home where my knee started complaining a tad so I walked some of it.. good excuse anyway. Then it was back down the road to home. At one point I felt like I was really running, rather than my normal plodding; feet landing lightly and flying along.. well for me anyway. It felt great and now all I have to do it be able to do that all the way along rather than the last few hundred metres. In total 7.5km in 48 mins.
Maroochy river run
The Queensland niggles seem to be leaving me alone today. From my strangely named WunPalm Motel in Maroochydore I found the path that ran alongside the Maroochy river. I wasn't sure how long I was going for as I wanted to see how things felt. After 5 mins or so I felt pretty good with just a slight twinge in dodgy knee which went away.I headed out for 15 mins at an easy pace and then decided to do a faster return. I set Garth to pace me at 6.05/km which was slightly faster than what I did last week and set off. Past the first km in 5.38 , so my pacing was out but I decided to just keep on at that sort of pace and see what happened. Next km in 5.42 and then the final 700m in 5.28 pace. So about 2.7km in an average of 5.36 pace. I'm not sure I could have kept it up for that much longer but it's not bad considering the limited training I've been doing. Pretty happy with that and even more happy with the fact that there wasn't much grumbling from the niggles and the left itb that Easy Tiger really worked on this week is feeling a million times better.Food:B:Tropical PSMT: missed as I was in deep conversation with the policeL: Salmon fillet and a small salad, glass of riesling and decaf coffeeAT: choc peanut protein barD:Vanilla orange PS
Strengthening and stretching
I had orginally intended to go to the gym this morning but lack of sleep and lack of car put paid to that idea. We're hoping that the new lulumobile will be delivered before Easter and we can be fully mobile again. The thought of hanging around waiting for a bus to get to the gym at 5.30 wasn't very appealing this morning.Instead I had a sleep in, the first for ages and then did an hour of Pilates, VMO strengthing, and some stretching at home. Who needs to go to the gym!I'm off to the lovely Sunshine Coast this afternoon to start work on a new project so tomorrow I'll be running in Maroochydore for a change. Cool 40 mins
Autumn has definitely arrived as the mornings are now nice and cool. Thanks to the end of daylight saving I was out on the street just before 6 and headed off to do my 40 min loop, which goes through the middle of Centennial Park.As I was running around the inside of the park I saw a man who looked strangely familiar coming towards me; morning Mr lulu :) He ran with me for a few minutes and then headed off to finish off his run at his pace, not mine. I arrived back home just before him so I must have been running faster.I was feeling a bit sluggish this morning but warmed up after a while. Niggle free run with just a bit of soreness from the massage yesterday. Ironman update
It's been a few days since I've had a chance to post so I'll try and be brief! We headed up on Saturday afternoon to Port Macquarie to meet up with the rest of the cheersquad at our accomodation. Very pleasant it was too. We'd packed six bottles of wine as fuel for the cheersquad but the girls only managed to drink four at dinner; very disappointing:) We got up early with the intention of watching the start but missed it; oops cheersquad 101, get to the start on time. We did manage to catch Minersrun at the transition to the bike before we headed off for our own little bit of activity. We knew they'd be out on the bike for at least 5 or 6 hours and so we went for a run. I headed off with Jen_runs and The Owl whilst Go Girl borrowed Mr Lulu and headed off for a long run. Us gals headed onto a short trail in the middle of town that wove it's way along paths and boardwalks. One lap saw us back at the start in about 30 mins. This was the longest run either Jen or the Owl had done of late so there was much celebrating. I headed off for another semi-lap as all the Brisbane induced niggles were still in Brisbane :) I did a total of 55 mins. I was sooooo excited I was dancing about for the rest of the morning. 55 mins and no problems! It was a good thing the girls were with me as I realised when I unpacked that I had no running socks, no tape for my knee, no hat and no sunscreen. All provided by Go Girl, Jen and the Owl. I should take them with me everywhere! After this triumph we returned to our B and B and waited for the long runners to return before heading down to the end of the road and watching the bikes go by. We saw Minersrun a couple of times before we headed off to lunch. After lunch we positioned ourselves at the bottom of a hill on the run leg and resumed cheering. The afternoon was spent chanting out people's numbers, getting very excited if we spotted Miners, DB or anyone else we recognised and generally trying to pump up the Iron men and women. The highlight of this for me was getting big smiles and waves from the runners as they went past and they realised we were chanting their number. Some who were walking even started running again as they past us. After about 4 hours of standing and cheering we were getting pretty tired and were relieved to see Minersrun come around on his second lap. We hopped in the car and headed to the finish in time to see Minersrun run triumphantly into the finish chute! Very inspirational, but not to do an Ironman. I can't believe he's already talking about doing it again next year.... madness. All in all a great weekend and it was great to run with the girls again as well as spend the weekend in their company. Monday we drove back to Sydney and today I headed out for another run. I had a 7.30 meeting so this was a short sharp 25 mins before heading into the City. Another session with Easy Tiger has loosened up my left itb which seems to be the worst of my troubles at the moment. Food blogging has fallen by the wayside but I'll start that again tomorrrow. However,Weekly weigh-in:Weight lost .6kg (total 2.6kgs)..slowly, slowly getting there.I've also added up my kms for March and have a grand total of 71km. A big improvement on last months and hopefully I'll be able to build it up from there.
